“Joseon Exorcist” Director, Writer, and Actors Apologize for Drama Scandal
Earlier this week, SBS’s historical drama “Joseon Exorcist” was finally canceled due to a story-twisting controversy. Jang Dong Yoon was the first actor to personally apologize for his decision to appear in the drama, followed by apologies from fellow members Park Sung Hoon and Lee Yoo Bi. Shin Kyung Soo, director of the drama, Park Kye Ok, writer of the drama, and the other five main cast also apologized.
Director Shin Kyung Soo wrote:
“This is Shin Kyung Soo, the director of Joseon’s The Exorcist. As the director in charge of all final decisions, I feel a great responsibility for the recent disagreements and would like to apologize to the audience.
I also want to apologize for releasing this statement late due to various situations that needed to be resolved after the drama was canceled.
Since the drama took place during the Joseon period and the characters are actual historical figures, I should have been more careful with the details, stories, and characters.
I feel responsible for this and reflect deeply on myself. As the director, I am responsible for all final decisions related to the content of the drama. The cast and crew just followed my instructions.
But I would like to say that I didn’t shoot the drama with a historical bias, as some viewers have criticized. All of the problematic scenes were due to the fact that I was missing a lot as a director. For that, I apologize.
Since the drama was canceled, I feel so sorry for the cast and crew who have worked hard over the past year, and the viewers.
Thanks to everyone who provided valuable feedback on the drama. I will not forget your recommendations and advice. “
Writer Park Kye Ok wrote:
“I’m the author of The Exorcist of Joseon Park Kye Ok. I sincerely apologize for making viewers uncomfortable over the past few days with a screenplay I wrote without too many qualms.
When I was preparing for drama as the lead writer, I wanted to remember my past mistakes and show my improvements with a good script. Instead, my complacency and ripe lack of judgment angered the public.
Once again, I apologize.
I had to show more respect for these heroes who founded the Joseon Dynasty and had a huge impact on our history. Instead, I relied on the fact that the drama was in the fantasy genre and deeply regret the sufficient judgments I made as a result.
Many viewers have criticized and speculated on a deliberate historical distortion, but I never imagined it. However, as a result, I have hurt other people, so I will take this to heart and will not forget this feeling.
I bow my head and apologize to the actors, production staff and the director who put their heart and soul into making a good drama, as well as the production company and the television company.
Once again, I sincerely apologize to all spectators. “
Actor Kim Dong Joon wrote:
“Hello! This is Kim Dong Joon. First of all, I lower my head and apologize. As an actor who has to choose his projects carefully, I was not as responsible as I should have been.
In particular, I sincerely apologize for not recognizing the issues and for neglecting the importance of history, which should never be taken lightly.
I will not forget the heavy responsibility that my choices and the way I portray on screen have influenced many people.
I disappointed those who loved me and supported me. I will take this opportunity to reflect on myself and look back on my past.
Since I cannot be forgiven and return the past with the excuse that I made a mistake and was ignorant, I will think, work hard and continue to learn so that this kind of thing does not happen again.
Once again, I sincerely apologize. “
Kam Woo Sung wrote:
“It’s actor Kam Woo Song.
First of all, as an actor for SBS’s The Exorcist of Joseon, I apologize for causing discomfort to people and audiences across the country.
Moreover, as an actor of great influence on the audience, I am sorry to have caused this deep and immeasurable disappointment.
Although The Exorcist of Joseon is not a historical drama based on historical facts, but rather a fictional story about demons, it used actual historical figures. As an actor, I had no idea that this could be seen by viewers as a distortion of the story.
The director and production crew who worked hard to create the drama over the past five months, as well as the cast, were all so focused on our own roles that we didn’t take the necessary precautions. Since the drama has now been canceled, as the person behind it, I once again apologize.”
Jung Hye Sun wrote a handwritten Instagram post:
“Hello! This is Jung Hye Sun.
First of all, I would like to sincerely apologize for participating in this drama without a proper historical understanding.
Even now, as I write this letter, I realize that I can harm someone despite my intentions, so I am careful and write this with a heavy heart.
As a person, as a citizen of this country and, above all, as an actress, I did not think deeply about the impact of my chosen projects on the audience. I sincerely apologize to those who were hurt by my mistake.
In the future, I will be more careful and attentive with every step I take as an actress and as a person. I will also work hard to arouse a proper historical feeling as a citizen of the Republic of Korea. I will become an actor and a more mature person.
Once again, I apologize. “
Geum Sae Rok also wrote a handwritten message:
“Hello! This is Geum Sae Rok.
I have read all the reports that have been submitted on the issues of the drama “The Exorcist of Joseon” and reflected on what I miss as an actor.
Despite the fact that I should have carefully studied the project during the selection phase, I decided to appear in the drama without realizing the problem of distorting the story. I sincerely apologize for the disappointment and concern people have with this choice.
I will not forget this. I will become a more responsible actor, choosing projects more carefully so that this does not happen again.
Once again, I bow my head and apologize. I am sorry”.
Seo Young Hee wrote:
“Hello! This is actress Seo Young Hee.
First of all, I would like to apologize for making many people feel uncomfortable by appearing in The Exorcist of Joseon.
It’s a fictional story, but it has characters based on actual historical figures, so I apologize for not being aware and not recognizing the parts that were distortions of the story.
As someone whose work has a great impact on the public, I have overlooked the full weight of this responsibility. From the public, as well as from all the inhabitants of the country, I apologize for having disappointed them. I will remember what they said and keep it deep in my heart.
I will do my best to have the right historical flair for the future and become a more mature actress who thinks more deeply about her plans.
Once again I apologize.”
